Leonidas I of Sparta.
The legendary Spartan king, claimed by blood to descend from the demigod Hercules himself, who at around 60 years old led 300 Spartans (plus several thousand allied Greeks) against the colossal Persian army of Xerxes I—estimated at over 100,000 to 300,000 strong—at the narrow pass of Thermopylae in 480 BC.
When Xerxes demanded the Spartans surrender their weapons, Leonidas replied, “Molon labe” (Μολὼν λαβέ) — “Come and take them.”
Best for fans of ancient Greek history, the Battle of Thermopylae, Spartan warrior culture.
